Throughout this debate, the affirmative has spoken of efficiency, consistency, and data. We have spoken of dignity, responsibility, and the soul of decision-making.
At its heart, this motion asks not whether AI can hire people—but whether it should.
The affirmative treats bias as a bug in the system. We see it as a symptom of a deeper truth: that hiring is not a puzzle to be solved, but a relationship to be forged. It is one of the most consequential acts in a person’s life—the gateway to survival, identity, belonging.
And yet, they would entrust this moment to machines that cannot apologize, cannot listen, cannot grow.
They say AI can be audited. But auditing requires understanding—and many AI models are black boxes, even to their creators. You can see that a candidate was rejected, but not why. Was it their age? Their school? Their career path? Without causal transparency, there is no true accountability—only the illusion of it.
They say AI removes human bias. But it replaces it with something worse: statistical discrimination disguised as neutrality. An algorithm may never consciously dislike someone—but it can systematically exclude anyone who deviates from the norm. The single mother, the career-changer, the refugee rebuilding their life—all become outliers. And outliers are discarded in the name of predictive accuracy.
Worse still, power shifts. Not to workers. Not to communities. But to tech firms writing code in Silicon Valley, optimizing for speed, scalability, and profit—not equity, mercy, or redemption.
The affirmative says AI “corrects humanity.” But correcting bias is not the same as understanding injustice. No algorithm can grasp what it means to apply for hundreds of jobs and hear silence. No model can feel the weight of being overlooked generation after generation.
Empathy is not a feature to be engineered. It is a practice—built through listening, humility, and shared vulnerability.
And when we outsource judgment to systems that lack these qualities, we don’t eliminate bias—we automate indifference.
We are told this is progress. But progress that sacrifices moral agency for efficiency is not progress. It is surrender.
Hiring is not logistics. It is an act of recognition: “I see you. I believe in your potential.”
That moment cannot be delegated to a machine.
So we urge you: do not confuse innovation with integrity. Do not mistake correlation for care. Do not allow the promise of fairness to blind us to the peril of dehumanization.
Because if we automate who gets a chance, we risk automating away our own humanity.
And once lost, it may never be retrained.
